He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Party's nomination for President in the 2000 election. He did well academically and was an all-county and all-state basketball player in high school. He was re-elected in 1984 and 1990, left the Senate in 1997, and was an unsuccessful candidate for the 2000 Democratic presidential nomination.
