In the 2004–05 season, the Miami Heat, led by head coach Stan Van Gundy and with new star Shaquille O'Neal, finished first in both their division and conference with a 59–23 record. Despite strong playoff performances, they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals by the Detroit Pistons.
