Nicknamed "The Manassa Mauler," Dempsey was known for his aggressive, relentless fighting style and powerful punches. He became one of America's first major sports heroes, helping to transform boxing into a mass spectator event during the 1920s, with his bouts drawing massive crowds and live radio broadcasts. Dempsey's most famous victory was in 1919 when he defeated the much larger Jess Willard for the heavyweight title, dropping him seven times in the first round. After retiring from boxing, he became a successful restaurant owner in New York City and was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
