FINALLY FERRARI AND SCHUMACHER'S YEAR. Schumacher had recorded his sixth win of the season at the previous race (Monza) and put the car on pole in Indianapolis. On a wet surface Coulthard in the second McLaren made the better start but was later penalised and Schumacher took the lead on lap 7 but the race looked to be taking a new twist when Hakkinen made an earlier switch to slicks and started to chase down the Ferrari.
