He was a bay colt owned by H.H. Maharaja Sir Vijaysinhji of Rajpipla (an Indian princely state ruler), trained by Marcus Marsh, and ridden by jockey Charlie Smirke. Windsor Lad beat a strong field including the favourite Colombo, and he went on to win the St Leger later that year as well.
