BornHarold Dennis "Dickie" Bird on19 April 1933 in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Bird developed a love of cricket from an early age. Before becoming an umpire, he enjoyed a successful career as a professional cricketer, playing first-class cricket forYorkshire County Cricket Club andLeicestershire County Cricket Club during the 1950s and early 1960s.
