Beautifully made tragedy about a Russian soldier (Bondarchuk) who escapes a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp then discovers that his whole family has died during the war. Harsh realism and the grim story make for hard viewing, but there’s lots of power and feeling in Bondarchuk’s directorial debut.
