Inman then handwrites: 'Hughie Pastoriza and I went to Roseland Ballroom, Broadway at 82nd Str. N.Y.C to see Count Basie’s Band and Woody Herman’s Band which have both been playing there for the past few weeks. We got there at 2:00 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 9, 1937). It only cost 55¢ to get in. Count Basie’s Band played from 2-3 and 4-5 while Woody Herman played from3-4 and 5-6. Herman’s band broadcast over WOR for a half hour at 5:00 Count Basie has 4 rhythms, 4 saxes, 5 brass and 1 main vocalist. I wrote down some of the numbers they played but didn’t know the titles of the majority of them. Whatever they were they sure were colassil (sic). Count Basie is one of my favorite piano players.
