Director Wojciech Jerzy Has worked on this project for five years. The film is an adaptation of Bruno Schulz's story collection "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass". Because of this incident, Wojciech Jerzy Has couldn't make a movie for the next eight years.
